POS hardware is the equipment that is needed at any sale outlet where the sale is finally concluded and payments received. Technology has progressed to such an extent that the earlier methods of preparing bills or vouchers by hand, accepting cash and giving out change has been almost totally replaced by computer terminals and other equipment that help the speedy conclusion of a sale.

One of the main items in POS hardware is the computer terminal that has installed software that integrates it with all the other devices normally seen nowadays on sales counters. Primary among these are bar code scanners that read information of the product from tags earlier put on it.

This enables the scanner to get information about the product, the price and the packing weight or other relevant information. The software that links it to the database on the computer will automatically transfer this information to the bill being prepared and to other inventory control bases meant for management control.

Details of each of these items are also automatically displayed on the computer screen. Once all the items purchased by a customer have been scanned and necessary instruction given to the computer a linked printer will then print out a bill for the customer giving all the details of the purchases made.

Customers can pay by cash or through the use of credit or debit cards. The cash register will then accept the cash which is again linked to the computer and other databases, and will automatically keep track of the money received and change if disbursed.

Where payment is made through cards, a magnetic stripe card reader is another piece of POS hardware that is linked to the computer. Other hardware that is necessary for such operations is devices to make bar code tags to be placed on merchandise.
